Through illustrated lectures, the interrelationships between art and religion, politics, historical events, and philosophy are major foci of study.

The course uses art as a vehicle for understanding the historical context of the ancient civilizations of Mexico and Central America: included are the Olmec, Classic Veracruz, Teotihuacan, West Mexico, Zapotec, Mixtec, Toltec, Aztec and Maya.
