LIBR 050 Research Skills for Lifelong Learning 3 unit(s)
Hours: 3 Lecture/Discussion
This course helps students develop essential information literacy skills necessary for lifelong learning. Students will explore topics related to psychological, cultural, sociological, cognitive, and physiological impacts of living in an information society, such as the digital divide, intellectual freedom, health effects of internet use, information overload, and online privacy. They will learn to effectively retrieve information sources and use criteria to evaluate them for academic and personal use.
Advisory on Recommended Preparation: COMP 130 or equivalent course with a minimum grade of C.
LIBR 101 College Research Strategies 1 unit(s)
Hours: 1 Lecture/Discussion
This course teaches students how to find, use, and evaluate information for research needs both inside and outside of the classroom. Students will explore strategies for effective research including using library resources, searching the open web, and avoiding plagiarism.
Advisory on Recommended Preparation: COMP 130 or equivalent college course with a minimum grade of C.
LIBR 102 Internet Information Resources 1 unit(s)
Hours: 1 Lecture/Discussion
This course teaches you to confidently find and use reliable information online for academic success, career advancement, and everyday problem-solving. Through hands-on activities and guided practice, you will learn how to construct focused research questions, search effectively using open web, free and subscription-based search tools, and use information responsibly.
Advisory on Recommended Preparation: COMP 130 or equivalent college course with a minimum grade of C or better.
LIBR 103 Evaluating Information Sources 1 unit(s)
Hours: 1 Lecture/Discussion
We live in a dynamic and challenging information landscape! Learning how to evaluate the information we encounter (both in college and outside of it) is essential for both academic success and lifelong learning. LIBR 103 teaches you the basics of evaluating information for credibility, using Library resources, and avoiding plagiarism.
